Renters in the city can rejoice as another purpose-built rental building is now under construction in downtown Toronto. Situated just a block north of The Well — another community with a major rental component — The Taylor Apartments is the latest project in a city where condominiums have dominated the housing market over the past decade. Developed by Tricon House and MOD Developments, The Taylor Apartments is located at 57 Spadina Avenue, just south of King Street West, on a long and narrow lot that was once home to a popular Winners store.
Construction on the project began in early 2018 with the demolition of the existing retail structure on the site, followed by the excavation of its four-level underground garage. By late 2019, construction had progressed past grade and today crews have begun pouring concrete for the fourth-floor footings and columns. The rest of the site consists of a maze of red heavy-duty steel and aluminum shoring frames and supports as subsequent floors are poured.
When completed in 2021, the Diamond + Schmitt Architects-designed tower will rise 36 storeys and feature dark, brick-like cladding and inset balconies that create a grid pattern. Inside, the project will house a total of 286 residential units, including a selection of family-sized three-bedroom suites. The property will also include private amenities for residents and a mix of office space and retail fronting Spadina Avenue.
With a location in the heart of the Entertainment District, residents of The Taylor will benefit from an amenity-rich neighbourhood close to shops, cafes, restaurants and attractions. Two streetcar lines are also right outside your door, along with several city landmarks such as the Princess of Wales Theatres, TIFF Bell Lightbox, Rogers Centre and the CN Tower.
