Residents of Toronto’s Fashion District have a lot of new neighbourhood amenities to look forward to in the next couple of years. Along Front Street, The Well by Tridel will bring a host of new office, retail and commercial space including dine-in food halls, casual eateries and world-class restaurants. A few blocks north is WaterWorks Toronto by MOD Developments Inc. and Woodcliffe Landmark Properties. The 13-storey development is another major mixed-use project with plans for 299 residential units, an expansive food hall and a brand new, 54,000-square-foot YMCA.

Construction on WaterWorks began in 2017 with extensive preservation work conducted by ERA Architects on the 1930s-era public utilities building that will be incorporated into the design. Much of the structure’s Art Deco exterior will be retained including the original brick, stone, wood and metal detailing.

Today, crews are now pouring the final two floors as the building approaches its full height. The structure’s U-shaped residential portion, which was designed by Diamond + Schmitt Architects Inc., has taken shape and can be clearly seen from ground level, while the first panels of windows have also been installed on lower levels.

Inside, the future food hall is lined with steel and aluminum shoring frames as permanent steel beams and columns continue to be installed. When complete, this expansive public space will be modeled after the renowned food emporiums commonly seen in Europe and New York City, and will be accessible through numerous pathways and arches that connect Richmond Street West and Adelaide Street West.

In addition to the food hall, YMCA and adjacent St. Andrew’s Playground, residents of WaterWorks will have access to a variety of private amenities including a sleek lobby with 24-hour concierge service, a party room/lounge, library, fitness club and Crossfit studio. A landscaped rooftop terrace is also planned with beautiful gardens, seating areas and dining tables.

Interior spaces designed by Cecconi Simone complement the building’s architecture and history by incorporating an industrial-chic aesthetic. Suites boast weathered wood accents, polished stone, and matte black kitchen and bathroom fixtures. Kitchens feature a combination of open and closed cabinetry and some suites boast exposed, industrial-inspired pantries.
