As we told you about a year ago, Canada’s largest home is not exactly where you’d expect it to be. Far from any of Canada’s major urban centres, the 65,000-square foot property sits in Haileybury, Ontario (about an hour and a half’s drive north of North Bay).
It also sits on the market – still. It’s true, the home, which boasts an art gallery, office area, swimming pool, squash court, huge hot tub, two elevators, gym and boathouse, is still available for about $25 million. The Globe and Mail reported earlier this month that a press campaign is about to kick off, hoping to drum up some interest.
The house is one of the last vestiges of Grant Forest Products Inc., a building products company founded in 1980 by Peter Grant. The company, which was once North America’s third largest supplier of oriented strand board, was crushed by the American housing crisis at a time when they were expanding rapidly.
Grant hoped to use the facility as a home, office, and showcase for his company’s products. It’s not completely done and some suggest the building would need as much as $1 million in work just to be liveable.
