Seattle’s 24th annual Gingerbread Village is here. The popular event is a collaboration between top local architects and chefs at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel, and this year they’ve teamed up to build majestic wizardry-themed gingerbread masterpieces.
Sponsored by Skanska, participating architects and builders include Ankrom Moisan, MBAKS & Gelotte Hommas, MG2, Bailly & Bailly, 4D Architects and CallisonRTKL & Hargis. Their large-scale Harry Potter-inspired creations will be on display in the Sheraton Seattle Hotel’s lobby from now until January 1st, and visitors will have the chance to vote for their favorite concept.

Staff at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel donate over 7,000 volunteer hours for this event. The displays use over 1,200 pounds of dough, 800 pounds of icing, 200 pounds of white chocolate, 250 pounds of almond paste and hundreds of pounds of candy. You may be wondering if you can eat the gingerbread structures when the event ends. The answer is no. After six weeks, the sweet buildings are rendered inedible, so enjoy them with your eyes while they last!

The Gingerbread Village is free, but a $5 donation per person is recommended. All proceeds will benefit the Northwest Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, which funds research to cure type 1 diabetes and its complications. The event has raised more than $841,000 for the foundation over the past 20 years.
