Shops at Don Mills are an epic win for Toronto. Open air villages are in short supply in the city and Shops at Don Mills is doing a great deal to mitigate this unfortunate absence.
There are so many great places to eat, shop and play (Anthropologie! McEwan! BCBG!) and soon there will be a great place to live. A place that fits seamlessly with the urban village vibe that Shops at Don Mills exudes.
Of course we’re talking about Flaire Condos, the new development by Cadillac Fairview Corporation and Fram Building Group. With a hint of retro style blended with an urban vibe and strong sculptural design, Flaire will do a lot to spice up the aesthetic of Shops at Don Mills.
“Our vision definitely had an element of nostalgia,” says Ralph Giannone, principal of Gianonne Petricone Associates Architects, the firm behind Flaire, “but at the same time was forward-looking and youthful,” he continues. Giannone’s firm is also one of the major players in the development of the entire Shops at Don Mills neighbourhood.
Flaire‘s will comprise two 11 storey towers with a cutting edge design. The towers, with their distinctive balconies and playful designs, are joined by a four-storey podium that invites residents to socialize while at the same time integrates the development with the urban brick facades of Shops at Don Mills. Giannone explains that Flaire fits into its surroundings “on a emotional level with informal, modern, landscape-based architecture, a wonderful meeting of suburban and urban that Shops at Don Mills already embraces.”
Well said Mr. Giannone!
With the design creating opportunities for interesting garden spaces and retail space on the ground level, it sounds like Flaire won’t have any trouble gaining attention in the hot area.
We’ll be following this one closely, so check back soon for more buzz. In the meantime have a look at some awesome photos of Shops at Don Mills!
