Furthest City is a website that calculates every major city’s global opposite. That is, the furthest city away on the planet with a population of at least 100,000 people.
Of course, because the web app deals only in major cities, a number of urban areas share a global opposite. For example, Perth, Australia is the furthest city in world from 179 destinations, including New York City (11,620 miles away) and Toronto (11,280 miles away). But taken from Perth’s perspective, the furthest city on the planet is Virginia Beach. Manhattan and Toronto are not the furthest city away from any other in the world.
To calculate the distances between cities Furthest City uses Vincenty’s inverse formula for ellipsoids.
It’s a fun little app and one that will surely come in handy for vacation planners who enjoy painfully long plane rides.
