A five-story, 260-unit apartment building has been proposed for the current site of a Vons supermarket near the intersection of Broadway and Lincoln Boulevard in downtown Santa Monica. According to a notice posted outside the building, which was first reported by Urbanize Los Angeles, developer Related California intends to replace the grocer and its surrounding parking lot with a mixed-use development.
The 60-foot-tall structure will feature a brand new supermarket on the ground level, 33,000 square feet of additional retail space and 390 underground parking stalls. A total of 65 units will be reserved for low-income tenants, as is mandated by Santa Monica’s Affordable Housing Production Program (AHPP).

The 2.5-acre property is located at 1500-1534 Lincoln Boulevard, just blocks away from the Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica State Beach. Related California recently kicked off construction at The Grand, a $1 billion mixed-use project in DTLA designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. The prolific builder has also completed condominium developments like The Seychelle and The Waverly throughout Santa Monica.
The Santa Monica Planning Commission has canceled all subsequent meetings since March 4th due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, so it’s unclear when the proposed project will undergo a public hearing.
