Unofficially dubbed one of the city’s trendiest neighbourhoods, the Junction has seen a flurry of redevelopment and growth activity in recent years.
The west end neighbourhood, named after the intersection of railway lines and indigenous trails it encapsulates, is rich with history. In the 1880s, when the Junction was first founded as the Village of West Toronto Junction, it was a prominent hub for factory and railway workers. The community functioned as its own independent city and federal electoral district, known as West Toronto, before amalgamating with the rest of the city in 1909.
Rowdy worker behaviour led to a vote banning alcohol sales in the community during the early 1900s, which stayed in place for nearly a century until the prohibition law was lifted in 2000. The Junction was also home to meat-packing facilities and the country’s largest livestock market at Keele and St. Clair, called the Union Stock Yards, earning the neighbourhood the title of ‘Hogtown.’ While the original stockyards closed in the 1990s, the site has since become a spot for big-name retailers, housing development and a few remaining meat-packing establishments.
Now a popular enclave of restaurants, bars and boutique shops, The Junction is a desirable community among families, renters, artists and prospective homeowners. If you’re in the market for a new construction condo, here are a few that are currently for sale in this historic Toronto community.
