Good news – Arizona is home to vast expanses of beautiful land and breathtaking vistas.
Bad news – that doesn’t mean your new house is going to be on a vast lot (though you may end up with the breathtaking vista).
An online home services company called Angi crunched the data to estimate the average lot size in each state and their major cities. And the news wasn’t good when it came to Arizona, which has the third-smallest lot size in the nation at 8,726.
That’s hard to visualize – but that’s about the size of two NBA basketball courts. So, you’re not exactly pressing up against your neighbours. But you will get to know them whether you want to or not.
The only other states with smaller average lot sizes are California and Nevada.
If you really want to find quiet, Vermont has the largest lots at almost 79,000 square feet. That’s a lot of basketball courts.
“Several factors can dictate how large the average plot of residential land is in a certain state,” according to Angi. “In many parts of the country, strict zoning laws establish minimum lot sizes meant to accommodate essential infrastructure in rural areas like septic tanks or drinking wells.”
The national average cost per square foot is $50. Arizona lots come in at $60.39.
That’s a bargain compared to Hawaii’s $110.86 per square foot, but makes Mississippi look attractive at $5.71 per square foot.
