Builder 100’s annual event is coming this spring, with the 2023 recipients announced in May. In the meantime, Livabl looks back at the top 15 new home builders of 2022.
1. D.R. Horton
2021 Total closings: 81,981
2021 Gross revenue: $27.9 million
D.R. Horton was America’s largest new-home builder in 2022 based on closings, as reported by Builder magazine.
D.R. Horton was founded in 1978 in Fort Worth, Texas. It has delivered more than 965,000 homes to customers and operates in 45 of homebuilding’s top 50 markets in the U.S., while ranking among the top 5 in 39 of those markets. It builds single-family homes, duplexes and triplexes.
D.R. Horton is known for its energy-efficient builds with plenty of smart home features, such as integrated geofencing technology and one wire connectivity.
D.R. Horton uses the Qolsys IQ panel in its homes. The Qolsys panel is the central hub that talks to all the devices of a D.R Horton smart home. Qolsys IQ is an award-winning panel that bridges the entire suite of products with Bluetooth capability, Wi-Fi integration, Z-Wave access, and cellular connectivity.
2. Lennar
2021 Total closings: 59,825
2021 Gross revenue: $25.3 million
This Miami, Florida-based builder has a vast product mix, with move up, entry level, active adult, single-family, and build-to-rent options in its portfolio.
Lennar has been in business since 1954. The homebuilder is active in 26 states and has built nearly a million homes in 68 years.
Lennar builds single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums, and low-maintenance residences catered to those who are 55-plus. Lennar also has a category of homes called “Next Gen.” Created with multi-generational living in mind, these homes feature an attached private suite with its own entrance, a kitchenette, living room, bedroom, and bathroom.
Some of the features of Lennar homes include smart home technology such as the Ring Video doorbell which lets the homeowner answer the door from anywhere in the home via their smartphone. Ring security systems and eero Pro Mesh wifi systems. Features available vary by community.
3. PulteGroup
2021 Total closings: 28,894
2021 Gross revenue: $13.3 million
PulteGroup was founded in 1950 in Detroit, Michigan and is the third-largest builder in the U.S., with more than 775,000 homes built. PulteGroup is active in 18 states and operates in approximately 50 markets throughout the country. The builder produces move-up, entry level, and active adult homes.
In April 2022 PulteGroup unveiled two model homes in Babcock Ranch, near Fort Myers, Florida. Babcock Ranch is the country’s first and largest solar-powered town. PulteGroup’s two homes are testing the latest, and in some cases, not yet commercially available, advancements in sustainable new home technologies and innovations.
PulteGroup began “Built to Honor” in 2011 — a program that launched to provide mortgage-free homes to military veterans who were wounded during their time of service. In May 2022, PulteGroup announced the construction of their 75th Built to Honor home.
4. NVR
2021 Total closings: 21,540
2021 Gross revenue: $8.7 million
NVR, Inc. operates in two business segments: homebuilding and mortgage banking. The homebuilding unit sells and constructs homes under the Ryan Homes, NVHomes and Heartland Homes brands.
Ryan Homes was founded in 1948 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The builder was established to provide housing in the expanding post-war economy. Since its inception, Ryan Homes has constructed more than 460,000 homes. Today, Ryan Homes offers housing styles to suit a wide range of needs, including single-family, townhouse, or garden condominiums.
NVHomes is known for its unique architectural details and designer elements. Established in 1980, NVHomes is active throughout communities in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania.
Heartland Homes was created in 1984, offering luxury flavor at affordable prices. Heartland has been building homes in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia and offers single family, townhome, and villa style homes.
5. Taylor Morrison
2021 Total closings: 13,699
2021 Gross revenue: $7.2 million
Based out of Scottsdale, Arizona, Taylor Morrison’s history can be traced back more than 100 years and the company is active in 10 states. Taylor Morrison has been recognized by Lifestory Research as America’s most trusted builder for the past seven years in a row. Builder magazine named Taylor Morrison as Builder of the Year in 2020.
One of the builder’s signature products is TMLivewell. The multifaceted TMLivewell includes a suite of products to provide buyers with healthy home products and technologies focused on healthier air, cleaner water, and safer paint. Air filtration removes harmful dust, dirt, and mold. Smart thermostat technology allows owners to regulate the temperature in their home from a programmable Wi-Fi enabled device. Filtered water is included at the kitchen sink, engineered to reduce contaminants. Finally, low VOC paint emits less chemicals.
6. KB Home
2021 Total closings: 13,472
2021 Gross revenue: $5.7 million
KB Home was founded in 1957 as Kaufman & Broad in Detroit, Michigan. It was the first homebuilder to be traded on the NYSE and was a Fortune 500 company from 2000 to 2008. The company’s headquarters is located in Los Angeles.
In 2016 KB Home ProjeKt®, designed for that year’s Greenbuild Conference, was a collaboration between KB Home, Builder Magazine, KTGY Architecture + Planning and numerous product manufacturers. It created a new concept for a compact home that utilized less land, an adaptable floor plan for families’ changing needs and was built with smart technology.
In January 2023 the builder made waves when it joined the metaverse by creating a virtual model home experience in Decentraland, one of the more popular metaverses. After creating an avatar, buyers can enter the Decentraland KB Homes model home, and tour different layouts on offer.
7. Meritage Homes
2021 Total closings: 12,801
2021 Gross revenue: $5.09 million
Meritage Homes has been operating for 36 years, building more than 155,000 homes in that time period. They build in 10 states and focus heavily on producing energy-efficient homes. Their commitment has earned them a wide variety of awards, including the ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year for Sustained Excellence every year since 2013. It was also named the 2020 Builder of the Year in the Green Home Builder category.
Meritage is based in Scottsdale, Arizona and builds products in the move-up, active adult and entry level categories.
The builder aims to offer savings to its customers with water-saving features, advanced building techniques, UV-blocking windows, and climate sealed homes.
8. Clayton Properties Group
2021 Total closings: 10,967
2021 Gross revenue: $3.7 million
Clayton Properties Group is made up of nine different builders. These include Oakwood Homes, Brohn Homes, Arbor Homes, Mungo Homes, Harris Doyle Homes, Highland Homes, Goodall Homes, Chafin Communities, and Summit Homes.
Since 1956, Clayton has built homes throughout the U.S. Clayton considers itself to be a versatile builder, producing apartments, college residence halls, military barracks, tiny homes, mobile homes, and modular homes.
The Clayton home building company constructed approximately 42,000 homes in 2016. Due to its rapid expansion, Clayton Properties Group decided to broaden its product offerings into the site-built housing market. Their builders produced 4,200 houses in 2018.
9. Century Communities
2021 Total closings: 10,805
2021 Gross revenue: $4.2 million
Century Communities has been in business since 2002. The company builds everything from single-family homes to townhomes, duplexes and condos in 18 states and over 45 markets across the country. Century Communities has ranked in the top 10 of Builder’s Top 100 every year since 2019. The builders offer unique options to potential homeowners such as buying their home online, via an initial $95 deposit.
Century Communities offers buyers two options: There’s the Century Communities flagship brand, that offers a wide variety of personalization from the ground up; Century Complete is the more streamlined choice, with an ample selection of move-in homes ready for purchase.
10. LGI Homes
2021 Total closings: 10,442
2021 $3.05 million
LGI Homes was established in 2003 and its first two years as a company it built, sold, and closed 337 homes near Houston. LGI continued to expand, and in 2018 it was recognized as one of the fastest growing companies on Fortune Magazine’s 2018 List of 100 Fastest-Growing Companies. By 2019 LGI ranked 10th on the Builder 100 list.
LGI Homes contains three different brands, designed to serve buyers through every stage of their lives. LGI Homes aims to help families move into an affordable new home. Terrata Homes has innovative designs, luxury features, and premium upgrades. LGI Homes Active Adult provides 55-plus buyers with appealing communities at attainable pricing.
11. Toll Brothers
2021 Total closings: 9,986
2021 Gross revenue: $8.4 million
Toll Brothers is a Pennsylvania-based company that was founded in 1967. It focuses on luxury home construction and currently builds in 24 states. Toll Brothers went public in 1986 and was named the World’s Most Admired Homebuilder in Fortune magazine’s 2022 survey of the World’s Most Admired Companies.
Toll Brothers prides itself on building in appealing locations near desirable amenities. The company has four different divisions: Toll Brothers Active Adult, Toll Brothers Apartment Living, Toll Brothers Campus Living, and Toll Brothers City Living.
Active Adult offers 55+ communities designed for active lifestyles, with social events, activities, and resort-style amenities that may include professional-caliber golf courses and clubhouses, fully equipped fitness centers, tennis and pickleball, swimming pools, walking and biking trails, and more.
Apartment Living is designed to provide quality multifamily living to rental apartment industry with superior customer service.
City Living brings the same Toll Brothers home experience to the most dynamic urban markets in the nation. Each condominium community offers innovative architecture, world-class amenities, and impressive attention to detail.
12. M.D.C. Holdings
2021 Total closings: 9,982
2021 Gross revenue: $5.1 million
M.D.C. Holdings is the parent organization of Richmond American. The builder has been producing homes since 1977, with 233,000 new homes built in 16 states.
Richmond American prides itself on personalization. For 2023 Richmond American is encouraging its homeowners to “get organized” by choosing a new home that is designed to help them succeed with productivity and to streamline clutter. Features like a dedicated workspace for those who are hybrid or remotely employed, a well-appointed kitchen with plenty of storage, and user-friendly laundry rooms that make it easier to get chores done quickly and efficiently.
13. M/I Homes
2021 Total closings: 8,638
2021 Gross revenue: $3.6 million
With over 113,100 houses sold, M/I Homes, Inc. is one of the top builders of single-family homes in the country. Its homes are marketed and sold primarily under the trade names M/I Homes and Showcase Collection (exclusively by M/I Homes), and they are currently sold in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota under the name Hans Hagen Homes and in Detroit, Michigan as Pinnacle Homes.
M/I Homes was founded in 1976 and sells homes in the categories of move up, entry level, and active adult.
M/I Homes operates the “Whole Home” program which promises buyers quality building standards, weather-tight, energy-efficient homes with low-flow toilets, faucets and shower heads, as well as environmentally friendly materials used throughout the house.
14. Ashton Woods Homes
2021 Total closings: 8,112
2021 Gross revenue: $2.6 million
Ashton Woods has been selling homes since 1989. The builder is located in Atlanta, Georgia and sells homes in Atlanta, Austin, Charleston, Dallas, Houston, Orlando, Phoenix, Raleigh and San Antonio. In 2017, Ashton Woods launched Starlight Homes – a five-step streamlined process for those who felt like homeownership was too out of reach. 50,000 families now own a Ashton Woods or Starlight Homes property.
Ashton Woods builds in the affordable/subsidized, move up, entry level, luxury/custom, single-family and build-to-rent categories.
Ashton Woods creates neighborhoods that fit uniquely with the local landscape, style and vibe. The company is heavily focused on design principles to please a wide variety of buyers.
15. Hovnanian Enterprises
2021 Total closings: 6,793
2021 Gross revenue: $3.01 million
K. Hovnanian has been building homes for more than 60 years. The company is headquartered in New Jersey and is active in 14 states. K. Hovnanian is active in the move up, entry level, luxury/custom and active adult categories.
K. Hovnanian’s products include its Four Seasons active lifestyle community, which aims to combine resort-style amenities with stylish home designs. Four Seasons has single family homes, villas, and condominiums in its communities. The Four Seasons homes are available in nine states, in cities such as Dixon, California, Buckeye, Arizona, Elyria, Ohio, Kissimmee, Florida and more.
